Support Groups

Why a Support Group?

  • Support groups are one way to meet people who are in the same boat you are in.
  • Besides helping you realize that you are not alone, support groups offer you a number of services and benefits. You can:
  • Share your feelings and hear the experiences of others
  • Understand and be understood by others in similar circumstances
  • Learn through the experience of others and through professional resources
  • Discover new ways of dealing with your own symptoms and problems
  • Renew your sense of hope in dealing with changes to your lifestyle
  • Make new friends and to break down feelings of isolation.

For any of these groups, please call 843.953.5640 for more information or stop by the Counseling office on the 3rd floor of the Robert Scott Small building. Many groups will accept new members at any time throughout the year.

Current Group Offerings

Relationships 101

This group focuses on “connecting with others” which centers around concerns about relationships.  How to start one, build a healthy one, leave an unhealthy one, or deal with the loss of one.  Have you ever noticed that we are surrounded by people?  But whether it’s family, friends, lovers, roommates, bosses or whoever, we need the skills, support and encouragement of a caring group of people to be our best with others.

Thursdays 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. RSS, 3rd Floor Robert Scott Smalls Room
Groups Leader: Holly Serrao, Ph.D. & Tom Cooper, Psy.D.,

E-Dots

The desire to eat or to withhold food can often feel overwhelming for those who struggle with an Eating Disorder. This group offers support to help you with your individual goals. Come learn to take real control of your life.  You don’t have to have a “diagnosis” to come, just a desire to  learn and share.

Tuesdays 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., RSS, 3rd Floor Robert Scott Smalls Room
Group Leader: Holly Serraro, Ph.D, & Jessica Schwarzkopf

Last Call

Are you concerned about your drug and/or alcohol use?  Do you find that you are basing your plans around alcohol/drug use?  Do you find that you drink more than you wanted to?  Are you concerned that you spend the majority of your free time partying and can’t find other things to do? Have you noticed that your grades are suffering? Relationships are suffering?

We understand that students with substance abuse, addiction, and other self-sabotaging problems are suffering. We believe that every student who comes to our group is an individual with his or her own personal life experiences, strengths, problems and coping skills. Last Call is group for students who are suffering from the effects of their own substance abuse, suffering from the secondary effects of someone else’s substance abuse, and for students who want to learn more about their own difficulties with drugs.

Thursdays 2:00—3:00 pm
Group Leader: Kate Dorsey, M.S
