How do I become a Cougar Counseling Team Member?

  • Attend a How to Apply to the Cougar Counseling Team Information Session (not mandatory, but helpful)
  • Application Deadline for applying for the Summer Recruitment is 7/11/18
  • Meet the Application Deadline (7/11/18)
  • Meet all requirements (see below)
  • Submit Student Application Package or Submit Faculty/Staff Application Package to Rachael McNamara, M.A. The Counseling Center
  • Complete the interview process
  • Receive acceptance notification
  • Be able to attend all MANDATORY training for all days listed below.  There are no make up training dates.  Please do not apply unless you can attend.
    • Cougar Counseling Team Active Listening Training, July 23, 2018
    • Cougar Counseling Team policies, procedures, texting, slack, tabling, and social media training, July 24, 2018
    • Be able to attend and complete Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, on a July 25th and 26th (both days 9:00 am until 5:00 pm)
  • Successfully complete all training materials offered throughout the year.

Do I get paid?

No. This is a voluntary service opportunity.

What are some of the benefits of being on the CCT?

What are the GPA/enrollment requirements?

Minimum 3.0 and currently enrolled.

How many earned credit hours must I have?

30 credits hour earned at a college or university.  Those with fewer credits are still encouraged to apply and will be considered on a case by case basis.

What is the weekly time commitment?

6 hours per week.

At what time are CCT's services offered?

4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday

To what length of time must I commit?

Applicants must commit to one academic year (Fall and Spring)

Do I have to have a certain major?

No. All majors are welcome.

How do we handle confidentiality?

CCTs sign and uphold an ethics agreement. This is a very serious matter.

What kinds of things make someone an effective Cougar Counseling Team Member?

Effective CCTs have been found to possess the facilitative skills of:

  • Empathy
  • Genuineness
  • Respect for others
  • A commitment to helping others
  • The ability to interact with a variety of people
  • Willingness to accept standards of ethical conduct such a confidentiality
  • Willingness and ability to work within the philosophy and goals of the program

Must I complete the training if I have completed counseling training elsewhere?


What do I do if someone poses a serious threat of harm to self/others?

The training (and manual) covers protocol for quick response to serious situations.
